The band was broadcast by the BBC in 1938 or 1939. Mr. Powell owned the “Leukemia” Snooker Hall (known as “The Luke”). Later it was the “Riverside Club”.
The snooker hall was owned by Mr Sid Powell of Canning street. It was not called “lucemia” the correct name was “The Lucania” It boasted 11 full size snooker tables and a couple of “ping pong” tables. It was constructed of a timber frame and corrugated steel sheets. It had a small booth that sold refreshments like Saxons, Corona, and Tizer Pop. A timer clock controlled the table lights, It cost threehapence for 15 minutes or three pence, (1.5 new pence) for half an hour. If there was any noise or fooling about on a particular table the “slug” in the timer in the booth would mysteriously fall through thus shutting the table lights off and bringing the session to an abrupt halt.
