  • The Betterment. This was an area at the northern most end of Cwm that was previously called (pre 1900) “The far fields” The unusual name came from the announcement of the procurement of the said land that would be used for the benefit and BETTERMENT of the people of Cwm and Talistown. It was run and maintained by volunteers governed by a committee of local people. I remember in the very early 1940’s an attempt to set up a greyhound racing circuit around what is now the top soccer pitch. The “hare” was hauled at speed around a “Heath Robin system of pulleys and wires, the motive power was an ancient motor cycle on its stand with the tire-less back wheel acting as a high speed winch, it was never successful One of the instigators of the idea was one “Dinky” Price
